8 Realities Successful People Face Head On

8 Realities Successful People Face Head On8 Realities Successful People Face Head OnAsk any successful person how they got to the top, and theyll tell you they had to face plenty of harsh truths and realities to get there. This isnt meant to be intimidating- its empowering Plenty of ultra-successful people have had to face tough obstacles in the moment, but luckily you have the luxury of time and preparation.Learning these lessons now will allow you to greatly improve and continue on yur journey to the top.1. Negative Thoughts Bring Negative OutcomesSeriously, enough with the negativity. Positive thinking really can change not only our outlook on life but our outcomes in life. When our brains are focused on fear or anger, our emotions take over and we lose our ability to think or act on other things. The negativity takes over our brain and limits the many choices and options that we have to react to the situation. In contrast, according to Barbara Fredricksons theory of broaden and bui ld, positive thinking leads our brain to broader thoughts of possibility and problem solving. The bottom line get rid of the negativity- its better for you and for those around you. Speaking of those around you...2. Youre Only as Good as the People You Surround Yourself WithYou parents probably told you this at some point. Even though you probably rolled your eyes at the time, they were right.Science says that negative attitudes are contagious. So dont wait until a toxic person in your life has brought you so far down that you forget how to get back up. You need to surround yourself with people who inspire you, encourage you, and help you realize your potential.Life is simply too short to be friends with toxic individuals- and plus, theres a lot of great people out there.3. Success Isnt Easy, and Its Often PainfulEstee Lauder once said, I never dreamed about success. I worked for it.If you want to accomplish something, as Nike says, Just do it. The more important it is, the more int imidating and overwhelming the first step is going to be- and thats a good thing.Channel this anxiety and stress into productivity and the results will be nothing short of rewarding. The individuals that dive headfirst into that vicious first step are not necessarily tougher or smarter than any of us, they have just realized that it produces positive outcomes. They have learned that the agony of starting something is unavoidable and procrastinating only lengthens their apprehension.4. You Determine Your Own Self-WorthDefine success on your own terms, achieve it by your own rules, and build a life youre proud to live.Anne Sweeney, Co-chair of DisneyYour self-worth needs to come from within we cant depend on others to do this for us, and we should certainly not be comparing ourselves to others. What makes you happy? What makes you feel accomplished? If running a 5K is the longest distance youve ever run, be proud- dont compare yourself to your colleague that just ran a marathon. Accor ding to Dr. Kristin Neff, by comparing ourselves to others, we are setting ourselves up for self-worth failure- someone will always be wealthier, thinner, or stronger, and someone will always be able to run that one extra mile. She even notes, Studies now show that basing ones self-worth on external factors is actually harmful to ones mental health.5. Theres No Such Thing as PerfectNo one thing and no one person is perfect. Even Sheryl Sandberg, the COO of Facebook, can attest to that. The sooner you realize and accept this, the more successful youll be, not only in your job but in your personal life as well. If your goal is perfection, youre setting yourself up to feel disappointment, because it simply doesnt exist. Is there room for improvement, and should you always deliver your best and final work? Definitely, but trying your hardest and aiming to never fail are two very different things.6. Third (or Thousandth) Times a CharmIf youre really lucky, you will succeed on your first t ry. However, fruchtwein real successes take a few rounds. Think about Henry Ford, who had two failed car companies before successfully launching Ford at the age of 45.As Joan Rivers put it, My whole career has been one rejection after another and then going back and back and pushing against everything and everybody. Getting ahead by small, ugly steps. If you feel passionate about something that failed, try taking another route. What will really define your success is your ability to be persistent Will you give up after a few setbacks, or will you shake it off and keep going? The attitude you choose in these situations can be even more important than the actions you react with.7. You Need to Be Your Own Best CheerleaderThose that matter dont mind, and those that mind dont matter.Dr. SeussNot everyone you know is going to support you- in fact, fewer of your family and friends than you think will actively cheer you on in your endeavors. I hate to break it to you, but people around you h ave their own lives to worry about, and some toxic people may even discourage you with jealousy and negativity. Remember this You dont need them You need to own your journey and create your own path to success. If youre lucky enough to have supportive people in your life, excellent- but be careful about how much youre depending on them to reach your goals You can do this on your own.8. You Need to Be FearlessAs Oprah Winfrey once said, Think like a queen. A queen is not afraid to fail. Failure is another stepping stone to greatness. At the end of the day, most of your regret will lie in the things that you were too afraid to try. Fear is one of the biggest deterrents of success- if you never get the courage to try, youll always fail.If youre feeling fearful about going after something you really want, ask yourself what youre really afraid of. I would put my biggest bet that the answer is failure. Personally, I would rather look back and say I tried, then wonder for the rest of my lif e what could have been. Remember, everything in life seems impossible, until it isnt.More From Inc.Getting to Know Fear10 Harsh Truths That Will Improve Your Life Instantaneously7 Simple Life Hacks That Will Make You SmarterPhoto of person thinking courtesy of Portra/Getty Images.

Sales Managers Niche Career Leads to Broad Resume Success

Sales Managers Niche Career Leads to Broad Resume SuccessSales Managers Niche Career Leads to Broad Resume SuccessA sales resume can highlight broad skills and experience even in a narrow industry.John had a few things going against him. He had been out of work because of a car accident a few years back, he wanted to relocate to California, and he felt he should consider changing industries. But his firm commitment to getting it right this time resulted in a top resume and landed him a job as national sales manager for a national broadcast television network.Heres how he updated his original resume (.pdf) and overcame the obstacles he was up against.Johns sales experience was in a very narrow niche of direct-response television advertising. To open up his search to other industries, I highlighted his core competencies that are relevant for any sales position. The resume became focused more on what he can do than his industry knowledge.Transferable skillsThe headline on Johns new resum e (.pdf) makes it clear that he is a sales manager with experience in local, regional and national markets. It takes into account his know-how in strategic planning and tactical execution.Because it was difficult to quantify his sales results, we created a separate section for some career highlights in his 16 years of work experience. This section pulled together an overview of what he has done into just over six lines. It highlighted keywords such as turned around, surpassed aggressive six-figure sales goals and closed largest single sale. These are accomplishments any sales department would appreciate. When used as talking points in an interview, industry-neutral accomplishments can support his interest in leaving his niche industry.Another strategy to pinpoint transferable skills is to highlight unusual experiences in your personal life that make you successful in your professional life. John knew just the thing Hed spent time in the remote rainforests of Papua New Guinea as part of a volunteer project when he was younger. He said that every person he meets who finds out about this is curious and wants to know more. So we incorporated that fact into one italicized sentence in his profile because it would really stand out. We connected it with his excellent listening and observational skills another skill any sales department would value.Master resumeWhen I come across a job seeker casting a wide net, I try to give him a master resume. That way he can edit this down for specific opportunities both within and outside his industry. For instance, Johns final resume has a table on the first page with 18 items in it which is really too many but this section is easy for John to edit based on the job opportunity. Now he wont have to shuffle between multiple versions. One issue we needed to address on the master resume was the car accident.John was in a very serious car accident in 2002. It took two years fully to recover. He mentioned the accident in his original resume, which I thought was a red flag. It would raise questions about the current state of his health. So, we acknowledged the period of time as a professional sabbatical. He is fully recovered now and confident in his ability briefly to describe what happened. John is not obligated to give more information in his resume, and this now accounts for that period of time in a neutral fashion. The final touch to the master resume was optimized formatting. Originally, the text was all on the right side of the page. It was visually imbalanced and hard to read, with regular and bolded fonts mixed together and no line spacing. Furthermore, his name was not on the second page. Johns new resume now uses the full real estate on both pages for easier reading and a more professional presentation.Good newsJohn now has a resume with a professional format that can be properly edited. It emphasizes his sales experience and applies these skills to any industry. Most importantly, the process of writing the resume helped boost his confidence and his interview skills, even before it was completed. And it landed him his new job.

A Guide to Deflecting the Current Salary Question in an Interview

A Guide to Deflecting the Current Salary Question in an InterviewA Guide to Deflecting the Current Salary Question in an InterviewA Guide to Deflecting the Current Salary Question in an InterviewInterviewing is a challenging process, and the most difficult part for many people is the question of money. Most candidates are inherently uncomfortable with the subject they dont want to come across as greedy or solely money-motivated. It can also be tough to strike the right balance between being open and bedrngnis disclosing information that could put you at a disadvantage down the line. But those questions do come up the salary expectations question, the current salary question and possibly mora. Would you like some pointers on how to handle this tricky situation?Begin with getting clear on three numbers your ideal salary, the reasonable salary for the ort, and the absolute minimum you will accept. Once you have those three numbers, add your current salary and a rough outline of your sala ry history over the last few years. Write them all down and dont show that paper to anyone.Sure, the current salary question may come up. However, here is a secret that your hiring manager or recruiter wont tell you neither one of them has a legitimate need to know your salary history. You are interviewing for a new position at a different company with its own set of budgetary guidelines, and your current salary is not relevant to the decision. TWEET Your financial situation is always a private matter. If the employer is not comfortable extending an offer based on your qualifications and fit, so be it.Here are five more tips for addressing the pesky current salary question.1. The right time to discuss the salary is when the employer is ready to make an offer.Dont get tricked into talking about salary in your first interview. Explain that you will be better equipped to discuss money once you understand the requirements of the job, and how well your qualifications fit the role. Mentio n that you are prepared to look at the overall package of salary, bonus, and other benefits, and that you understand the industry averages for your region.2. Try to get the prospective employer to disclose the range first. It is always better to get your hiring manager to talk about the budget for the position before you throw out any numbers of your own. You may need to prompt him or her, and do your research first. You might try something along the lines of, Based on the industry data, positions at this level of responsibility call for X to Y. I am sure you have budgeted for the position with the competitive data in mind. What is your target range? If you dont want to ask for their range up front, consider this I would appreciate it if you could make an offer based on my experience and qualifications, as well as your budget for this position. We will take it from there.3. If you have to talk numbers, disclose your target range - not a single number.Any one number can come across as an ultimatum and those dont work well in a negotiation scenario. By giving your prospective employer your range, you are leaving more room for a win-win outcome where your optimal salary range overlaps their budget. After all, everyone is working with limited resources, and you may not fully understand the constraints the hiring manager has.4. Be sure you are talking to the decision maker. There is another benefit to delaying the money conversation, and that is ensuring that you are negotiating with a decision maker. An HR manager may be a qualified professional in his or her own right, and alienating HR is not a smart long-term decision. However, your prospective manager or his babo has a better understanding of the department budget, your qualifications, and the potential value you stand to deliver to the company.5. Smile, and remain in conversation. This can be tricky when the current salary question comes up, especially if the negotiation feels confrontational to you under the b est of circumstances. Do your best to manage your mental state, dont get defensive, and stay in the conversation. Remember that demands and yes or no positioning does not work as well as open-ended questions and a genuine desire to explore options. You are in this conversation because you trust the employer to look for an optimal solution that works for both of you. If that statement does not feel true, consider the possibility that you are negotiating for the wrong position at the wrong company. Now that we have considered the strategic basics for your overall approach, lets look at some tricky scenarios. What do you do if an online application form requires a salary history? With online applications as a starting point for the hiring process, it might feel like you are at the companys mercy. Skipping the question may get your application rejected, but disclosing your salary history up-front certainly does put your cards on the table too soon. You do have a third option. I suggest put ting down your current target salary for every one of the salary fields. Then, use the first available comment box to clarify that all disclosed salary figures reflect your desired target salary. That way, you are not lying, and keeping private information close to the vest until the right time. What do you do if the hiring manager gets aggressive with the current salary question and insists you just give him a number right now?Well, you have a choice to make. You can certainly make a call to simply answer the question. However, dont do it because you were bullied into it If the hiring manager chooses to play heavy-hitter this early in the relationship, the dynamic wont get more collaborative after you accept the position. I suggest taking a couple of breaths, reminding yourself that you are in control, and using the interviewing process as an indicator of what it will be like to work at this company. What do you do if the salary range is below what you expected? Here, yet again, you h ave options. Remember that money is one important piece of the puzzle, but certainly not the only one.Look at the position overall does it move you closer to where you see yourself in 5 years? Did you enjoy the hiring manager? What does the overall compensation package look like and does the employer have any ability to budge on the number of vacation days, childcare expense allowance, the possibility of an early performance review and raise? What will your commute be like? Will the employer be flexible about you working from home? It is possible that the big-picture package of this offer comes out close to where you will ultimately be happy and overall well-compensated.That being said, sometimes the answer is that this opportunity does not offer you enough in exchange, and you have to politely thank the prospective employer and turn down the offer. That brings us to our closing point. Remember that you dont have to accept an offer you are not happy with. Sure, you may feel pressur ed to accept a sure offer in favor of trying to negotiate and risking the possibility that the employer will change his mind and hire someone else. However, accepting what you feel is not a ritterlich offer can lead to resentment and real dissatisfaction with the job. It can become a demotivating factor that affects the quality of your work, the consistency of your effort, and your attitude. So, if you are not feeling excited about the prospect of accepting the offer, it is best to continue your search. Want to see how your resume stacks up? How to Prevent and Treat Motion Sickness While FlyingHow to Prevent and Treat Motion Sickness While FlyingFeeling queasy? Airsickness, a specific type of motion sickness, is a common ailment formany pilots and passengers. It tends to happen more often early in flight training, as your body adjusts to the moving elements involved with flying an airplane. Passengers are also likely to get airsick since they often read or focus on objects inside the airplane. If youre a new pilot or passenger experiencing airsickness when you fly, try not to become frustrated. Many peopleget airsick when they first begin flying, butthere are methods for overcoming it.The good news is that most people go on to experience rewarding flying hobbies or careers. The Causes of Airsickness Airsickness is the result of the bodys reaction to different signals it tries to interpret. While in a moving vessel, such as an airplane or a car, the vestibular system senses movement in one waywhile the brain interprets a lack of movement from what the eyes see. While flying in an airplane, your eyes tend to adjust to the movement as if youre barely moving. Your body, specifically your inner ear, reacts to the actual movement in relation to gravity and tells your brain what it feels. The conflict of signals confuses the body, creating a feeling of nausea along with many other symptoms. The Symptoms of Airsickness QueasinessNauseaFatigueChillsSweatingIncreased SalivationVomitingYawningHeadacheDizzinessIn severe cases, disorientation or incapacitation Are You Susceptible to Airsickness? Some people are more susceptible to becoming airsick than others. For example, women and children seem to be more vulnerable to motion sickness, as well as new pilots and passengers not used to the flying environment. Pilots not flying the airplane (such as an instructor observing a student) might become sick while in the air since their attention isnt focused on flying. It has been found that paying attention to flight duties can prevent or relieve airsickness. The FAA has published a list of things that can make a person more susceptible to becoming airsick. These coincide with the IM SAFE checklist, and include the following IllnessMedicationStress and AnxietyAlcoholFatigueEmotionsAnxiety How to Prevent Airsickness If you are susceptible to airsickness, start by flying a series of short flights close together to allow your body time to adjust to the motions involved with flying.Eat a nutritious diet that is low in sodium and fat. Dont eat immediately before flying, but dont fly on an empty stomach, either.Stay hydrated.Try to relieve any anxieties you might have about flying before you get into the airplane. If youre learning how to fly, study as much as you can before the flight. Showing up prepared will decrease your stress and anxiety level and might prevent a nervous stomach. If youre a student pilot, talk to your instructor about your options. For example, instead of attempti ng the scheduled lesson on steep turns, maybe you could try a straight-and-level cross-country flight, while your body adjusts to the flying experience.Natural remedies, such as ginger or pressure therapy can help in some cases, but these remedies arent proven. How to Alleviate Airsickness Get fresh air. Open the air vents and windows if possible. Try to cool off.Look outside at the fixed point on the horizon and make all turns, climbs, and descents very shallow. Keep your head as totenstill as possibleUse supplemental oxygen, if available. If youre the pilot not flying and youre skill level allows it, ask to take the controls. Focusing your attention on one thing can keep your mind off of feeling sick. What Not to Do If youre a passenger, dont read while flying.Dont put your head down.Dont forget to take sick sacks with you.Dont focus on your airsickness. If you think youll be sick, you probably will be. Try to stay positive and focus on specific tasks to keep your mind busy .If youre a pilot, dont forget to fly the airplane. If youre too sick to fly, land as soon as practical and get your feet on the ground. If youre a pilot, dont take any medication for airsickness before flying. There are no FAA-approved medications or over-the-counter drugs that pilots are allowed to take before flying to treat airsickness. All nausea and motion sickness medications have side effects that can affect a pilots mental state and judgment, as well as cause drowsiness. If you are a pilot with a severe case of motion sickness, talk to your aviation medical examiner about your options. Getting over airsickness can take some time, but if you are persistent and follow some of these guidelines, you have a good chance of conquering any motion sickness you may have in the beginning.

How to write an effective Data Scientist resume (with a real example)

How to write an effective Data Scientist resume (with a real example) How to write an effective Data Scientist resume (with a real example) Data Science has become one of the fastest-growing fields in recent years. It has also been mentioned as one of the world’s best jobs across several industries and has a very lucrative career trajectory the average salary for a data scientist in the US in 2016 was over $100,000. But standing out and getting a job in this competitive field is a real challenge.Ultimately, a great resume is one of the most effective ways to get noticed. As we’ve learned from Pavel’s story, an effective data scientist resume can have you on the track to a fulfilling and exciting career. Steps for Writing a Data Scientist ResumeTo write a successful data scientist resume, you can make use of these steps that we’ve distilled from Pavel’s approach to getting hired at Booking.com.1. Research opportunities in the fieldBefore putting your resume together, you need to see what vacancies are out there. Data science is not limited to one field and it can be fruitful to specialize in one sector or anoth er. Personal networks are one of the most effective ways to find opportunities. Pavel benefited from being referred to the position by a friend. You can start by checking LinkedIn connections or asking around your networks.2.  Analyze the job descriptionUnderstanding the job description will allow you to tailor your resume to the specific requirements of that vacancy. “I customized the [resume] in a way that it addresses everything that the requirements in the position description said.” Pavel used this strategy when assessing the vacancy with Booking. The better you understand what the company is looking for the better you can tailor your resume perfectly.3. Find resources on the topic While data science is a new area, there are resources out there that give some insight into the types of things recruiters are looking for. One of the best sources of information for this are books on interview questions for data scientists (which are actually a thing, look them up). Glassdoor is also perfect for finding past interview questions. Pavel credits this kind of research into past interview questions as being crucial “I bought those books which were expensive but I’m very happy I did that now.”Understanding the questions that you might be asked in an interview allows you to specify experience in your resume. If you know you’ll be asked about coding, make sure that’s included in the resume; even if its not heavily featured in the job description. 4. Build your resume with a flexible platform Often, resumes are split into two categories. As Pavel puts it,“There’s two components: aesthetic, the more beautiful the piece of paper. And the second is the content. What I really appreciate is that supports both components”. When you create your resume, you want to make sure it’s relevant to the vacancy (as covered in step 2) but it needs to catch the recruiters attention. Melding both of those together puts your best foot forward and gives you the best chance at landing an interview. 5. Put your resume through a review You’re not always going to catch mistakes in your resume. It’s also very difficult to predict how your resume reads from another person’s perspective. Having friends look over your resume or even other professionals in your area is the last thing you should do before sending it out in an application. With , you can easily refer your resume to others using our built-in referral link. This way, friends, family, and colleagues can leave comments suggesting edits where necessary.Writing Your Data Scientist Resume These real resume examples have shown that a great data science resume accomplish three things: catches the attention of the recruiter, answers the questions of the job description and shows your personality. All three are doable using a clean, pleasing design. Like Pavel, you can try our builder to create a resume that ticks all the boxes for aesthetics and content.

7 signs you work with a toxic achiever how to cope

7 signs you work with a toxic achiever how to cope 7 signs you work with a toxic achiever how to cope Toxic achievers pose a serious dilemma for business owners, managers, and supervisors. On the one hand, they get the job done - quickly, and more successfully than their peers. So, their work production or sales numbers look great. But, on the other hand, they create major headaches due to the way they relate to others, their negative conflictual attitude, and their propensity to frequently want “exceptions” to company policies and procedures.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!  7 signs of a toxic achieverHow do you know if one of your team members is a toxic achiever, or just a pretty good producer who can be irritating to work with? Let me describe some common characteristics.Toxic Achievers: Are brighter, faster, and more productive than anyone else in their area within the organization.  From a production point-of-view, they are “top dog” (They know it. You know it. The management knows it. And they use this position to their advantage.) Relate to others in a condescending, brusque manner, flaunting their productivity as a reason to be treated as special.  Toxic achievers are good at what they do and they are not shy about reminding others of their performance history. They freely share their advice with colleagues (even when it is not asked for), and are loath to receive input from colleagues. Can be angry, vindictive, and destructive with their words.  These individuals can chew you up and spit you out in one motion, either in private (if you’re lucky) or in front of your peers and supervisor. Have no compunction about using others to help them accomplish their goals. In their mind, since they are so successful, it makes sense for others in the organization to serve them so that they can become even more successful. Believe they are above the rules.  Rules, policies, and procedures are for “normal” employees, not high achievers like them. Standard procedures and paperwork just get in the way of them being able to achieve more, so they should be able to “go around” procedures or have someone else go through them for them. (This includes paperwork, expense reports, how vacation time is calculated, or going through the correct channels to request resources.) Create frequent turnover in staff around them.  Whether it is their administrative assistant, clerical support for the team, their colleagues, their supervisor, or others in departments that have to collaborate with them - a revolving door of staff develops around the toxic achiever. Nobody wants to work with or for them for long. Produce conflict among their supervisor and managers - about how best to deal with them.  Eventually, heated discussions occur between the toxic achiever’s supervisor and other department heads or high level managers. Often the high level managers want to keep them because their production numbers are so high (and they don’t have to work with them on a day-to-day basis). How to deal with a toxic performer at workToxic achievers are like a large black walnut tree - it produces pounds and pounds of walnuts but nothing else can grow near the tree due to the toxicity of its leaves and root system. They produce but nothing else lives.Ultimately, you must get rid of the toxic achiever if you’re going to have a healthy organization.  Until they are gone, chaos and conflict will continue (they will create it) and they aren’t going to change without a dramatic life changing experience (so don’t hold your breath for that). One of the main reasons toxic achievers have to go is because the work environment will not heal and become healthy until they are gone (kind of like having to get a splinter out of your finger). No other course of action works. They are who they are and they bring the associated positive and negative results with them.Rarely is the survival or the organization dependent on them (unless they have core knowledge or key relationships nec essary for the existence of the company) - it’s wise not to let them get to that point of power. It is important to note that expelling the toxic achiever from the system requires documenting their negative impact on “non-productive” areas, such as their unwillingness to follow rules and procedures, or their inability to work collaboratively with others. Otherwise, you are setting yourself up for a lawsuit once they are dismissed.ReliefOnce the toxic achiever is gone, you and those who worked with them will begin to realize how poisoned you felt and how much better life at work is with them gone (while allowing them to poison some other place). This article originally appeared on Appreciation at Work. You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

How to Use an Employee Referral Program

How to Use an Employee Referral Program How to Use an Employee Referral Program Would you like to tap into the power of an employee referral program? A referral program that emphasizes potential employee referrals from current employees is a method employers use to find superior employees. This definition includes potential employee referrals from social media and social networking, too. Employees are keen to refer their friends and associates to their current employer if they are happy with their current employer. They want to work with people whom they like and respect. They also want to work with associates whom they believe and trust will get the job done. And they want their company to succeed. So referrals of great people by current employees contribute to their companys success and their own job security. Sharing a Positive Work Experience Additionally, if your employees love their work and respect your company as a workplace, they will want to share that positive experience with the people they care about the most. Why not share a  good thing with friends and family members? Employees want the respect and admiration of the people that they know. They will earn more of it by thinking of them and including them in an excellent organization. Few employees are willing to put their own name and stamp of approval on an individual if they arent convinced the referred person will do a great job. Current employees also have a solid picture of the organizations culture. They know which friends will fit in with your current crowd of employees. You can ask employees for referrals for specific jobs or, generally, to develop a pool of special, talented candidates before you need to hire a person for a specific position. Social Media Contacts In this world of online  social media  and social networking, an employee referral program has even broader potential to locate qualified candidates. Each person you employ probably has wide-ranging friendships on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and Pinterest. Your employee referral program allows you to tap into these valued contacts with everything from personal outreach to posted job ads. When an employee posts an open job on LinkedIn, their associates see the ad and inquire about more details from the employee. These are a legitimate source of employee referral candidates, too. Any interaction that the employee does to bring the referral to your door is eligible to count as an employee referral. Special Treatment for Referrals The most important factor in expecting employee referrals to continue is that you provide speedy feedback to the referring employee. Too often in organizations, employee referrals are sorted into the current pile of resumes and treated the same as resumes that came in across the transom. This is a big no-no. You need to treat employee referrals differently. They deserve special treatment, and the referring employee deserves feedback about what you have decided about hiring the referred candidate. They are expecting feedback so that they can update the individual they referred and because they have invested their personal recommendation in this space. Let the employee who made a referral know if you dont currently have a suitable job opening for the referred candidate; let them know you have placed that person in your pool of candidates for future openings. Providing that information will satisfy the employees need to know and will give them a message they can pass on to their referral. Rewards and Recognition An employee referral program solicits the referral of qualified job candidates from current employees who know your workplace culture and understand your job requirements. With or without a referral bonus or incentive, a referral program is in your best interests for recruiting superior staff. Successful employee referral programs range from programs that substantially reward employees for critical position referrals to referral programs that provide no incentives at all for an employee referral. Referral bonuses range from a token of appreciation to a $10,000 check for the right employee referral. Other companies rely on building a company culture that encourages employee referrals so that employees get to work with great teammates. Recognition and appreciation are demonstrated to employees who send their organization qualified employee referrals. These programs gain widespread support because the employer has effectively built in enough employee recognition to make the referrals worth an employees energy and time. Why Employee Referral Programs Fail Despite their great potential, many employee referral programs fail to attain their program goals: superior employee referrals. They fail for many reasons that include:Failure to provide a reasonable incentive reward and appropriate recognition.Failure to keep referring employees informed and up-to-date on the status of their referral.Failure to publicize the referral requests to employees who can help recruit. And the biggest fail of all? Failing to provide a culture and a workplace into which employees want to make referrals. There are several things you can do to make an employee referral program successful, including encouraging all employees to make referrals regardless of the position they hold and providing training to employees in improving their networking skills.

Interview Questions to ask when Hiring Manufacturing Workers

Interview Questions to ask when Hiring Manufacturing Workers Interview Questions to ask when Hiring Manufacturing Workers Interview Questions to ask when Hiring Manufacturing Workers DeZube   Some industries, including construction and manufacturing, face the challenge of recruiting workers who lack a resume. A job application can collect basic information to help screen candidates  for skills and experience. Yet it won’t tell you how job seekers apply their skills and abilities, behave on the job, or what they accomplished in prior positions. That’s why when you interview without a resume, it’s critical to ask questions that delve into those areas. And the easiest way to dig deep is to ask behavioral interview questions. Behavioral interview questions probe how someone actually handled a task or situation in a prior job. They can help you focus on how a candiate gets a task done, how they will fit in with your company culture or how they will tackle day to day challenges. “In manufacturing, I’d want to know if they’re going to be on time, if they mind getting their hands dirty, can work with team members and that they’re loyal,” says Dennis Theodorou, vice president of operations for recruiting firm JMJ Phillip Group, Detroit. For example, behavioral interview questions could help shed light on prior workplace conditions: What is the dirtiest environment you’ve ever worked in? How did you cope with that challenge? To create behavioral interview questions, make a list of the ten most important job tasks, workplace challenges and personal characteristics needed to succeed in the job. The job description can be a good place to find some of those. For each item, write one behavioral or situational question and jot down a few follow-up questions you might ask to probe for more details. Here are some behavioral interview questions to get you started with your interview preparation. Machinist:      What hand tools, power tools, and measuring instruments have you used?      What’s the most challenging material you’ve cut?      What’s your favorite machine to run?   Tool and Die Maker:      What tools, fixtures, and experimental parts have you made?      What machine and hand tools have you used most in prior jobs?      What’s the most intricate mechanical fixture you helped design, develop, or construct?   Electrical and Hydraulic Technician:        What would you say to a co-worker you saw violating safety rules? How would you respond if he told to you mind your own business?      What is the most challenging customer you’ve dealt with?      What is the toughest piece of equipment to troubleshoot?   Welder:        Tell me about a time you worked on a joint project where your co-worker wanted to do the task differently. How did you resolve the situation?      How did you avoid injuries in your last job? Operations Manager:        What rewards, other than money or promotions, have worked well for you in past positions?      Tell me about a time you had to put in place an unpopular process change. How did you go about it? When you don’t have a resume to refer to in the interview process, tailor your interview questions to uncover a candidate’s real-world experience. Use the conversation to create a mental roadmap of responsibilities, capabilities, and the applicant’s fit. Asking the right questions will help give you and your new hires greater peace of mind.
